DENVER ZOO SUMMER SHOWS RETURN MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

Memorial Day Weekend again kicks off Denver Zoo’s summer season of shows and demonstrations.

Starting Saturday, May 28, favorites like the Wildlife Show, Wild Encounters and Meet the Animal Stars will begin its summer schedule at Denver Zoo. The zoo also will offer special stations led by volunteers featuring special animal encounters and informational booths, including one on Asian Tropics, the zoo’s new 10-acre exhibit scheduled to open in 2012.

The zoo’s Wildlife Show will feature a variety of animal performers including birds that soar over the audience and other creatures sure to win over animal lovers of all ages. The twice-daily shows run at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Conoco Wildlife Theater. The Wild Encounters show runs in the more intimate setting of the Wild Encounters Amphitheater at noon and 1 p.m. daily.

We have many animal stars in Denver Zoo’s Wildlife Show, ranging from Buster the African grey parrot to Cosmo the barn owl. One animal with a new role in the show will be Bodie the Wonder dog. There may be a different show line-up every time a guest visits, but guests can expect more newcomers to the mix this summer! Guests can learn more about all our animal stars at www.denverzoo.org/animalstars.

Meet the Animal Stars features a variety of the zoo’s Education and Volunteer Services Department animals in an informal setting from 3 to 4 p.m. outside the Animal Nursery. Trainers will provide entertaining and educational information about the zoo’s featured animal stars and answer guests’ questions about these exciting creatures. Guests also are encouraged to take photos during this up-close animal encounter. Animals rotate daily, so there is always something new.

From 10 a.m. to noon daily, guests can learn more about Asian Tropics at the viewing tower, where volunteers will discuss the 10-acre project currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2012. Guests also will discover more about the zoo’s plans for a gasification system, a clean sustainable energy solution for Asian Tropics that will turn “poop into power.”

Depending on the weather, Denver Zoo offers many animal demonstrations throughout the year – Sea Lion Shows; Lorikeet Adventure; Animal Giants and Africa’s Greatest Predators. Luci will return to this summer’s Sea Lion Show after missing much of last year after giving birth to her first pup, Ady. Activities are free with admission.
