Manitou Springs Becomes a Wi-Fi Hotspot

The Downtown Manitou experience is maximized with free Internet access and real-time shopping deals.

Colorado’s best kept secret just keeps getting better. With the culmination of the downtown revitalization project, full retail occupancy and expanded opportunities for dining and entertainment, Manitou Springs is the summer destination for locals and tourists alike. And the best just got better: in the coming weeks, a portion of downtown Manitou Springs will become a Wi-Fi hotspot, creating an ideal spot to work and play. The initiative is part of a joint effort by Manitou’s Business Improvement District (BID) and iManitou (Manitou’s combined Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Council) to keep the town technologically current while preserving its historical charm.

“We’re really excited about becoming a Wi-Fi hotspot,” said Dave Symonds, President of iManitou, and owner of the Stagecoach and Craftwood Inns. “Now, when you are within the boundaries of the BID, you will have network access and can get online with your smartphone, laptop or tablet computer. This means that you can talk about what a great time you’re having in Manitou in real-time---post a blog, upload a photo to Facebook or tweet about the great deal you just found in one of our stores.” Internet access is free, enabling visitors to fully enjoy all that Manitou has to offer in an interactive fashion.

When a user logs onto the network, a splash page will feature discounts, information and listings from local merchants. Are you looking for the perfect pair of cowboy boots? Fudge? Which Pikes Peak Cog Train reservations are still available for today? Which Manitou retailer offers sunscreen, since you forgot it at home? Now, visitors and locals will know in real-time where to dine, shop and enjoy entertainment and immediately be able to share their impressions with friends and family. “We feel that this will actually help to create and strengthen a sense of community by enabling everyone to participate in the Manitou experience, Additionally, businesses with free WI-FI tend to experience an increase in average transactions and loyalty,” said Symonds.

The installation of the Wi-Fi nodes is expected to be fully completed before the end of the summer season.

Manitou Springs has its roots as a health resort and an artists’ colony and boasts a diverse population; support for the culinary, holistic, visual, literary and performing arts; and a colorful history. Lauded as one of the coolest small towns in the country by Budget Travel magazine, Manitou lives up to its reputation with cool shopping/dining options, inviting art galleries and live entertainment venues.
